Magdalena Barreiro
Magdalena Barreiro is a professor of finance at Universidad San Francisco de Quito, and an independent consultant on economic and political developments in Ecuador.
As Ecuador’s Minister of Economy and Finance in 2005, she brought the country back to the international capital markets, overseeing the first new sovereign debt offering in almost a decade, and reestablishing good relationships with creditors. From 1997 to 1998, she was an economic and financial advisor for the National Council for State Modernization and Privatization (CONAM), supervising company valuations in the privatization of the national telecommunications and electric sector.
She was a financial sector coordinator at the Central Bank from 1992 to 1994, working with the IDB on measures to oversee the financial sector, and to revamp capital markets law, social security and other public financial institutions.
Dr. Barreiro holds a Ph.D. in management science from the Illinois Institute of Technology; a master’s in management from MIT; and an undergraduate degree in business management from Escuela Politecnica del Ejercito.
