Politics: June 2022 gubernatorial election results

Morena carried four of the six states that held gubernatorial elections this past Sunday (Hidalgo, Oaxaca, Quintana Roo and Tamaulipas), while the PAN-PRI-PRD alliance held on to the governorships in Durango and Aguascalientes. As we have stated, a Morena victory in four states in these elections marks a strengthening of its territorial grip and political positioning ahead of 2024. Morena took Hidalgo, a state the PRI had controlled for almost a century. In Oaxaca, another historical PRI bastion, Morena carried the state with 60% of the vote. The Morena victories in Oaxaca and Hidalgo could be understood as a PRI accomplishment not only because the winning candidates were drawn from that party but also because the outgoing PRI governors worked to ensure Morena would emerge victorious. In a sense, the PRI organizations in these two states metamorphosed into Morena over the course of this campaign.
