Politics: 2027 electoral scenarios and their implications
Morena enters the 2027 midterms as the dominant force. Its ceiling, however, is already visible: vote intention hovers between 39% and 47%, with another six to nine points from the PT and PVEM, and the realistic direction of the trend is downward. The party's assets — a consolidated social base, social programs, territorial control, presidential approval and favorable electoral authorities — now coexist with vulnerabilities that have accumulated rather than dissipated.
Those vulnerabilities are economic, social, security-related and political. Growth of one to two percent means the economy will neither add nor subtract votes, unless employment, consumption or inflation deteriorate unexpectedly. Strained public finances leave less room to expand programs or buy social peace. The gap between official security figures and public perception could push demands for a hard line to the center of the campaigns, while U.S. pressure over narco-politics threatens the moral credibility on which the 4T's narrative rests. The most immediate threat, however, is internal: open disputes over nominations in Baja California, Chihuahua, Michoacán and San Luis Potosí, along with friction with the PVEM and the PT, may prove more damaging to specific gubernatorial races than any external factor.
None of this is sufficient on its own. Discontent erodes Morena only if the opposition converts it into votes, and there is no clear sign of that happening: the PAN has ruled out formal alliances, Movimiento Ciudadano is running alone, and the two new parties are barred from coalitions in their first contest. At most, the PAN and PRI will reach tacit agreements in selected states and districts.
We consider four trajectories for possible political scenarios. Managed continuity (45%) and territorial backlash (30%, Morena wins but with specific territorial losses) are the most probable; crisis with opposition gains (15%) and authoritarian hardening (10%) remain live but secondary.
