52 die in Russian coal mine disaster

On November 25 an accident at Listvyazhnaya Mine in Kemerovo Region occurred. Smoke filled the mine and killed the miners. The rescue effort was unavailing and 6 of the dead were rescuers. Managers at the mine have been arrested on suspicion of non-adherence to safety regulations. There were 285 people in the mine and most of them escaped unharmed. There is a high level of methane in the mine so now efforts to recover bodies have been suspended. At least 51 people injured people are being treated in hospitals. 3 of them may yet succumb to their injuries. Russia has suffered in a few fatal mining accidents over the last decade. Coal is an important export especially to China. Mining is relatively well paid. However, mines struggle to find workers as mines are in remote and inhospitable regions, mining is dangerous and there are fewer young men around.This disaster will hurt the government's popularity even more. The government has already been battered by inflation and a rise in the cost of living.
