A complicated political panorama for the elections

The schedule for the elections of next August is putting pressure on all political organizations to define their alliances and candidates, who should be registered at the Electoral Council by next June 7th after being defined through an internal election process. So far, the candidates who have confirmed their participation in the next elections are: Eduardo Maruri and Jan Topic for president; Pedro Freile for vice president with the support of Social Christians;  Daniel Noboa, son of Alvaro Noboa; Fernando Villavicencio representing Construye (former Ruptura 25); Otto Zonnenholzner, a former vice president who will be supported by Izquierda Democratica; and Yaku Perez who convinced four small parties from the left. On the other hand, the candidacy of Leonidas Iza, representing Pachakutik, is still pending confirmation amidst the severe internal differences between this party and CONAIE. Also, UNES has not announced an official candidate, and the names of Andres Arauz, Carlos Rabascall and Luisa Gonzalez are mentioned as possible. Maruri is a businessman, the CEO of Grey (an award-winning publicity agency), and with a long trajectory of social and political participation in sports and charitable non-profits. He can be identified with the right-wing political side. However, he is receiving support from Centro Democratico lead by Jimmy Jairala—a clear populist who was close to Correa. Jan Topic is also a businessman. He owns the largest security company in Ecuador and was linked to corruption accusations made against former Vice President Jorge Glass.
