A fat tail

In our conference call last July, we spoke of necropolitics and the tail risk of the death of the President in office. Long-rumored to be sick, the 74-year old President reportedly fell off his motorbike last Thursday, felt well enough to go to Japan to attend the enthronement of the emperor today but had to cut short his trip due to “unbearable pain in his spinal column.” It is not clear at this time how serious his condition is. Certainly, this latest health scare will serve up more fodder for the rumor mill which has lately been rife with talks of Presidential “sightings” in the early morning hours inside a major hospital in Metro Manila. Attempts by his aides to play down worries over his health have made matters worse, e.g., three people gave three different accounts of the circumstances behind his motorbike accident. Unhelpful too were pictures in past days of the President wearing a portable air purifier around his neck.Meanwhile business groups welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to release the test recount of the 2016 vice presidential election results, a move they expect will pave the way for the dismissal of former senator Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.’s poll protest and remove any doubt as to who is the rightful Vice President and next in line for the presidency.
