The Erdogan administration seems to have grasped that the Ukraine War shall last for the foreseeable future, with its reverberations on geopolitics and domestic economy to be felt through the next elections. Hence, it is executing a new game plan, which is likely to have important economic implications, as we discuss inside.
Meanwhile, pressures on the popular Istanbul Mayor Mr. Imamoglu and pro-Kurdish Rights Party HDP are intensifying. The unprovoked military campaign in Northern Iraq against PKK and the bombing of Syrian Kurdish city Kobane smack of efforts to consolidate nationalist voters. Both come with the risk of host governments seeking revenge in one way or other, though.
