After a controversial video and pressure from Congress, the government announces MP’s aimed at the economy

After President Jair Bolsonaro changed the tone of his discourse last night, when he acknowledged the seriousness of the pandemic, today he went back to controversy by sharing a week-old video on social media in which a man films an empty food market in Belo Horizonte. In the video, the man says: “It’s the governors’ fault, see? Because the president is ceaselessly fighting for a responsible shutdown. And this gang of scoundrel governors are there…wanting to make a name for themselves and gain political prominence”.

The president’s post received considerable criticism, mainly after the press showed that food market actually had a normal amount of activity and supply. In addition, the Ministry of Agriculture has denied that there is a food supply crisis. A couple hours after posting it, Bolsonaro deleted the video.

Despite the public’s call for national unity, the relationship between the federal government and Congress remains tense. The House Speaker, Rodrigo Maia (DEM-RJ), said that the president should be more careful with what he posts on social networks.
