After victory, other challenges

BRAZIL POLITICS - Report 03 Aug 2017 by Murillo de Aragão and Cristiano Noronha

As we predicted, Michel Temer successfully defeated the accusation presented by the Prosecutor General of the Republic, Rodrigo Janot, in the Lower House. There were no surprises. The number of votes came in as we predicted: including abstentions and absences, the result was positive for Temer, with 263 votes in his favor, 227 against, 2 abstentions and 19 absences.

In a speech after the vote, the President emphasized his commitment to reforms and said that he is willing to proceed with Pension Reform. This information was confirmed to the Political Scenarios team by Ministers Henrique Meirelles and Eliseu Padilha.

The result shows that Temer has solid support in the Lower House. It also reveals a likelihood that new accusations that will be presented by the PGR will also be defeated. The situation will only change if the new accusation is paired with new, robust evidence.
