Alianza Pais will Continue for Four More Years

ECUADOR - In Brief 02 Apr 2017 by Magdalena Barreiro

The candidate from Alianza Pais, Lenin Moreno, has officially been declared the next president of Ecuador with 51.07% of votes against the candidate from the opposition, Guillermo Lasso who received the vote of 48.96% of the population. The results from the election show a highly polarized country where almost 50% of the population voted against the continuity of Alianza Pais in the government rather than supporting Lasso's plan of government. Also, the newly appointed Attorney General, Carlos Vaca Mancheno is a close and personal friend of President Rafael Correa, and Carlos Polit has been re-elected for another six years as the Comptroller General, after almost 11 years in office when he has demonstrated his close relationship with the current government. Therefore, aside the difficult economic situation --challenging for either candidate, it is clear that Alianza Pais who has in addition achieved 57% of legislators, has developed a political net strong enough to avoid any kind of future prosecution of the evident acts of corruption revealed by Oderbrecht and found in Petroecuador as well. The political model resembles that of other governments from the Socialism of the twenty first century like Venezuela and Bolivia.Lenin Moreno has four years to continue the positive development the government has carried out during the past 10 years, and to recover what half of Ecuadorians feel the country has lost: freedom, democracy and clean ways. The opposition has four years to mature and recognize that if divided, the possibilities of future success are not promising.
