Announcement of constitutional reform to establish an independent Office of the Attorney General

President Luis Abinader, in a speech to the Nation on the occasion of the first year of his mandate, announced that during this year he will be calling for a constitutional reform with the purpose of consolidating the independence of the Office of the Attorney General, one of his main campaign promises. He also said that his government is committed to a broad reform agenda. Specifically, he identified the following twelve reforms: 1) reform of the Office of the Attorney General, the Accounting Chamber and the Office of the Comptroller General of the Republic, 2) reform of the electricity sector, 3) reform of the water sector, 4) reform of the national police, 5) reform for the modernization of the State, 6) educational reform, 7) reform of the health sector and social security, 8) transport sectorreform, 9) reform for digital transformation, 10) comprehensive fiscal reform, 11) labor reform and 12) reform of the hydrocarbon sector. In order to undertake these reforms, President Abinader called on the political, social and business leadership to address these process together with the government. Among the achievements of his government, President Abinader highlighted the fact that the DR is one of the countries with the lowest fatality due to Covid-19 and is among the ten countries with the highest proportion of its adult population vaccinated worldwide. He also cited as achievements the strong economic recovery, the accumulation of international reserves, the strong attraction of foreign investment, the maintenance of social protection programs and the execution of a public investment program amounting to DOP70 b (USD1.2b)
