Armenia and Azerbaijan close to a peace treaty after talks

On April 9 peace talks between the two former Soviet republics took place in Brussels. The EU midwifed the talks. The leaders of both countries met and expressed optimism about the talks. They agreed to establish a joint commission to delineate the border.The talks took 4 hours, which is a good sign itself. The two leaders said they wished to end the Nagorno-Karabakh dispute permanently. Azerbaijan is keen for recognition of its sovereignty over Nagorno-Karabakh, which Armenia occupied from 1991 to 2020. Armenia says that in principle it could agree but needs concessions on other areas. The Armenian opposition is opposed to recognizing Azerbaijani sovereignty over Nagorno-Karabakh.Russia brokered an end to the 2020 war between the two countries. Russia will not like the EU muscling in on what Russia sees as its backyard. Moscow is very distracted at the moment for obvious reasons. There are 2,000 Russian peacekeepers in between Azerbaijan and Armenia.If the two nations make peace, this will normalize relations between Armenia and Turkey because Turkey is Azerbaijan's closest ally.
