Armenia and Turkey reopen their border

On March 24 Armenia said that the land border will open for the first time since 1993. At first only diplomats and people who are neither Turkish nor Armenian will be allowed to cross.  Planes can fly over Armenian airspace to Turkey and vice versa. However, there are no direct flights between these countries. The two nations have discussed establishing diplomatic relations.  The detente between the two is surprising because Azerbaijan is blocking a road to Nagorno Karabakh, where many Armenians live. Armenia is openly disappointed about a lack of Russian support. This is partly why Armenia has felt compelled to be friendlier to Turkey. Some Turkish business interests are clamoring for trade with Armenia. This would offer opportunities to Armenia but also put some people out of business.
