Armenia suspends membership in Russian led military alliance

On February 23 Prime Minister Pashinyan said that his country had taken the decision regarding the 6-member Collective Security Treaty Organization. The 6 CSTO members are all former Soviet republics. The CSTO is Russia's equivalent of NATO. Armenia refused to send a delegate to the CSTO summit in 2023.  Armenia has grown disaffected from Russia since 2020, when Russia failed to provide Armenia ample support in a war against Azerbaijan. Moscow said this is because it recognizes the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh as legally Azerbaijani. But sometimes Azerbaijan also attacked Armenia proper. Pashinyan also said that Russia is propagandizing against him. Moscow is clearly unhappy with Pashinyan, who is not pro-Russian, unlike his predecessors. Armenians generally are less attached to Russia than they used to be. They feel let down. Armenian is courting the West but Western countries can afford to do very little for Armenia. They can scarcely fund and arm Ukraine as it is. Armenia also has a cordial relationship with its neighbor Iran, which would make a close relationship with Western countries difficult to achieve.  Russia said it is seeking clarification of Yerevan's stance on the CSTO.
