Associates of former Kazakh President jailed or removed

On February 25 Darigha Nazarbayev, the daughter of former President Nazarbayev, resigned from Parliament. She had once been chairwoman of the senate and seen as a possible president herself one day.On February 19 the former Defense Minister Murat Bektanov was put into jail for a 2-month pre-trial detention. He has been been charged with negligence in relation to the massive disturbances in January 2022. It could be that he has been charged because he was perceived as being too close to Nazarbayev. Bektanov's conviction is virtually certain. On February 23 the former deputy head of KNB (Kazakh intelligence) was charged with abuse of office. Two other former deputy heads of the KNB are already in custody. Again this could be part of Tokayev's campaign to oust Nazarbayev loyalists and replace them with his own acolytes. Nazarbayev remains Leader of the Nation. The title now seems empty. He is still living in opulence but is not heard from anymore.
