Azerbaijan attacks Armenian-held territory

RUSSIA / FSU POLITICS - In Brief 19 Sep 2023 by Alex Teddy

The region is legally Azerbaijani but has been held by Armenia since 1991.  There were loud explosions in Armenian-held Nagorno-Karabakh. Azerbaijan says it is using high precision weapons saying it is an anti-terrorist operation. It claims to have established humanitarian corridors to allow Armenian civilians to leave. Azerbaijan informed Russia of its action minutes before the offensive began. Moscow has called for restraint. Armenia accused Azerbaijan of ethnic cleansing. Russia has over 1,000 peacekeepers in the region. Armenia has complained bitterly since 2022 that they are not doing their job. Armenia is an ally of Russia.
