Azerbaijan early election

On December 7 Baku said the presidential election will be held in February 2024.  The election is being called early because there are favorable conditions due to the success in regaining Nagorno-Karabakh. The government may well foresee economic difficulties in late 2024 so wants the election out of the way sooner. President Ilham Aliyev has been nominated by the New Azerbaijan Party. His re-election to another 5-year term is a virtual certainty. He has been in office for 20 years. His party dominates government at all levels. Elections are a charade in Azerbaijan but the government still leaves nothing to chance. They would prefer to be popular and not to have to bother cheating too flagrantly. Most people are apathetic because they know they cannot influence things. Aliyev and his late father have ruled the country for 39 out of the last 53 years.
