Azerbaijan halts advance on Armenian positions

On September 20 Baku said it would not retake more of Nagorno-Karabakh. Armenian forces there promised to lay down their weapons and negotiate about giving the region back to Azerbaijan. The ceasefire was mediated by Russian peacekeepers. This is a success for Azerbaijan. But Armenia would have lost more had Russia not intervened.  Armenia said 32 people were killed by bombardment in Nagorno-Karabakh on September 20. Some Russian soldiers were also killed in what seems to have been a case of mistaken identity. Armenia wants the Armenians resident in Nagorno-Karabakh to be allowed to stay if Azerbaijan comes to control it. Azerbaijan began the attack on September 19. Hostilities have never fully ceased since the 2020 war. The US and EU also demanded that Azerbaijan halt its attacks. Baku warned its attack would resume if Armenia did not abide by the agreement.
