Belarus arrests 159 dissidents

On January 15 the US and the European Union denounced the arrest of the oppositionists and said those taken into custody are human rights activists. Those arrested are often relatives of political prisoners and prisoners who were freed in 2023. They were arrested by the KGB on suspicion of extremism.Some people had software installed on their phones and were released within hours. The opposition has been all but neutralized since the disputed presidential election in 2000. The question is why the government felt impelled to arrest so many people now.
