Bolsonaro appoints Federal Police Director amid political tension

BRAZIL POLITICS - Report 04 May 2020 by Murillo de Aragão and Cristiano Noronha

President Jair Bolsonaro appointed Ronaldo Alexandre de Souza as the new director-general of the Federal Police (PF). Rolando was chosen five days after the Minister of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), Alexandre de Moraes, suspended the appointment of the head of the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin), Alexandre Ramagem, to the command of the PF. The swift inauguration of Rolando Alexandre de Souza to the PF drew attention, as it occurred in a closed ceremony about an hour after his name was published in the Official Gazette of the Union (DOU).

Despite the resume that Rolando Alexandre has in the PF, his name may be received with a certain distrust in the organization because he is very close to Alexandre Ramagem, whom Bolsonaro intended to appoint as general director of the PF amid accusations from ex-Minister Sergio Moro about the president’s alleged attempt to interfere in the institution. The issue of the PF will continue to put pressure on President Jair Bolsonaro and increase the political temperature, as the press gradually begins to publish details of the content of the testimony given by Sergio Moro to the PF this weekend.
