Bolsonaro’s dual strategy

After the negative repercussions of his participation in a protest with supporters that supported a military intervention and the closing of the Federal Supreme Court and Congress, President Jair Bolsonaro, when leaving the official residence at the Alvorada Palace, stated that Congress and the Supreme Court (STF) should be “open and transparent”. Bolsonaro also spoke of respect for democracy and the Constitution. “I ask you, please, not to mention this here. Supreme Court open, transparent. Open, transparent Congress”, he said.

The president repeated the same actions as he did in previous situations when he participated in acts organized by his core supporters: at the same time that he signals to these supporters, he issues statements to “calm the spirits” of public opinion in the aftermath.

Despite the negative reaction from yesterday’s political act, Jair Bolsonaro has been successful in his strategy of permanent polarization. This paradoxical tactic keeps his allies mobilized and manages, through controversial measures, to share the news cycle, which carries stories about the negative impact of the increase in cases, deaths and overcrowding of the healthcare system due to the advancement of the coronavirus pandemic.
