Bolsonaro tested positive for COVID-19

BRAZIL POLITICS - Report 07 Jul 2020 by Murillo de Aragão and Cristiano Noronha

President Jair Bolsonaro announced on July 7 that he tested positive for the coronavirus. In an announcement made live on TV Brasil, CNN and Rede Record, Bolsonaro said he has a fever of 38ºC, but that his temperature is already decreasing. He also reported that he had been feeling uneasy and tired. However, he said he is now feeling “perfectly well”. Despite having tested positive for COVID-19, Jair Bolsonaro said that in the next few days he will work via videoconference at the Alvorada Palace and that he will have assistants sign documents.

At least for now, Jair Bolsonaro’s positive test for coronavirus has generated a small mobilization of his supporters on social media to his defense. As has been happening in recent weeks, his supporters have been less likely to mobilize on social media. Only the representatives most loyal to Bolsonaro have spoken in his support. However, since the disease has killed more than 60,000 Brazilians, Bolsonaro may see more support in the coming days.

If he recovers quickly – as everyone hopes – hydroxychloroquine may return to the agenda as a political tool, even if its effectiveness is not scientifically proven.

Politically, the positive test may work in his favor, since he may avoid issues such as the testimony for the open investigation on his alleged attempt to interfere in the Federal Police (PF), as well as the Fake News and the Fabrício Queiroz investigations. After all, at this moment, his state of health has become a priority on the national political agenda.
