Breakaway region of Georgia may unite with Russia

On May 14 the President of South Ossetia said a referendum on seeking accession to the Russian Federation shall be held. The referendum will be on July 17 2022. It is almost certain that the result will be Yes to joining Russia.In 2008 Russia fought Georgia over the region. Russian troops in South Ossetia are peacekeepers Moscow insists. Georgia says they are occupiers. Georgia is seeking to join the EU and NATO. Some Georgian volunteers have gone to Ukraine to join the Ukrainian Army.If South Ossetia is accepted into Russia this will spark an outcry from the Western world.In February 2022 Russia recognized Donetsk and Luhansk as independent countries. It is speculated that this is preparatory to their absorption into Russia. If the South Ossetia referendum goes ahead then referenda may be held in Donetsk and Luhansk.
