BRICS seek to project alternative to G7 after summit

 On August 25  the summit in South Africa ended. Russia was represented by the Foreign Minister. Putin did not go because South Africa has signed the Rome Statute and theoretically would have been obliged to carry out the International Criminal Court's arrest warrant.  BRICS agreed to move forward with de-dollarization. This has been a stated Russian goal for a decade. But they disagree on the alternative. BRICS plans to welcome 6 more members in 2024. These are Egypt, Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia, Iran and the UAE. It is a group for the non-Western world. But BRICS expanding in a sense weakens it. BRICS only makes decisions unanimously. The chance of 1 out of 11 vetoing something is higher than 1 out of 6. Moreover, some of the new members are very small in population or economic importance. BRICS demonstrated that Russia is not an international pariah. The other four BRICS members are all serious world players. They are all neutral on the Ukraine War and trade normally with Russia.
