Calm restored in Kyrgyzstan

On August 8 the ex-president Atambaev was arrested. He is facing charges of corruption and abuse of power. Atambaev's supporters had tried to prevent his arrest. Fighting led to the death of one police officer and the injury of 80 people. Order has now been restored.At the start of August there were street fights between Kyrgyz people and Chinese miners. Local people said that Solton Sary mine was polluting the area and causing livestock to die. The government has suspended activity at the gold mine. A former presidential candidate named Omurbek Babanov flew back to Kyrgyztsan on August 9. He had been living in Moscow for 18 months. Babanov is under investigation for inciting ethnic hatred. Babanov says he wishes to find a peaceful solution to the dispute between Atambaev and Jeenbekov.
