Castillo will face former President Fernandez in the PLD primaries

Gonzalo Castillo has been selected, on behalf of the Danilo Medina faction, to run against former president Leonel Fernández in the PLD primaries on October 6. Castillo, who was Medina's public works minister for over seven years, has a limited political history, but has been very loyal to Medina. Precandidates close to Medina agreed to support the one who achieve the best results in several surveys which were conducted for that specific purpose. Castillo was the winner. Fernandez continues to be the favorite to win the nomination for the PLD. All the surveys give him a comfortable advantage over the rest of the precandidates. However, the numbers may change if the momentum that Castillo has had in recent weeks is maintained for the next 26 days. This impulse includes explicit support from more than half of the almighty Political Committee of the PLD, which sends a strong signal to party members. In addition, it is been said, in the next few days, most of the PLD senators will endorse Castillo. However, the fact that the primaries are open (anyone in the electoral registry can vote) introduces uncertainty. On the one hand, Fernandez is much better known than Castillo and can attract extra party voters. However, the ability to bring people to the polls is critical, and in that area Medina and his group have much greater capacity because they are in government and have access to the resources and levers of the State to achieve that goal. If Castillo defeats Fernández, the fiscal risks will increase because Medina and his group will put all the effort into getting Castillo to win the presidency in May.
