China supports Russia against NATO

On February 4 Putin met the Chinese President in Beijing. Putin is there for the start of the Winter Olympics. It was their first in person meeting for almost two years. President Xi refused all face to face meetings until now because of coronavirus.China said that NATO should not let in any more countries. Putin lauded the excellent relationship that China and Russia enjoy. The two governments published a document accusing the United States of undermining global security and causing instability. The document condemned the Cold War mentality and said that all states should respect sovereignty and security. The document said that the US had harmed security in the Asia-Pacific Region. It expressed unease at Australia, the UK and US making a defense pact in the region.Russia believe that new Western sanctions will have a limited effect if they come at all. That is because Russia can trade with China and buy the tech it needs there.On February 4 the US said it had intelligence that Russia plans to stage a false flag operation in eastern Ukraine. This would mean faking an attack that would kill civilians and blaming it on Ukraine. The UK alleged a similar plot in January 2022. Moscow condemned these claims as slurs.A new round of diplomacy is seeking to defuse the situaiton. The French President will visit Moscow on February 7 and then Kyiv. The German Chancellor will visit Kyiv on February 14 and Moscow the next day.The President of Turkey said on February 3 that Western countries have aggravated tensions between Ukraine and Russia. Although Turkey is a NATO country it is seeking to act as an honest broker between Ukraine and Russia.
