Chinese Defense Minister in Moscow

On August 18 Li Shangfu ended a 4-day visit to Belarus and Russia. The aim of the trip was to deepen military ties. He met Putin, Lukashenko and the defense minister of both countries. Russian state media enthusiastically covered the visit. It proves that Russia is not alone in the world. Belarus and China will hold joint drills in 2024. China has a Global Security Initiative (GSI) masterminded by President Xi. It is an alternative to the current US-centric vision. China says it can make the world safe through discussions and collaboration. It calls for more intelligence sharing and military drills. Critics of the GSI said it is intended to strengthen dictatorships. Some in the West see the GSI as part of China's bid for world mastery. Countries that want a good relationship with China say that they approve of the GSI. China's peace proposal for Ukraine is along the lines of the GSI. Li addressed a security conference in Moscow and said that China can promote peace in Ukraine, Korea, Afghanistan and Syria. He also said the dispute about Iranian nuclear power can be resolved peacefully. Defense Minister Li was openly critical of the US in his Moscow speech. He denounced US hegemony. Li also reiterated that Taiwan is Chinese and said no one can use it against China.  92 countries had delegates at the conference. None of them were Western. Saudi Arabia, India, Israel, Kazakhstan, Iran and Vietnam were there. Putin's recorded message was played at the conference. Putin accused the US of pouring fuel on the fire of conflicts all around the world. He denounced US arms shipments to Ukraine.
