Clashes in Kyrgyzstan as ex-president defies government

The capital of Kyrgyzstan saw street brawls on August 7 as supporters of the ex-president clashed with the police. Former president Almazbek Atambaev is wanted in court on charges of abuse of power. Atambaev is holed up in his compound just outside the capital Bishkek and refusing to obey subpoenas. Police commandos stormed the compound. The authorities have not clarified whether they have arrested Atambaev or not. One police officer has been killed in the fighting. 23 other people have been injured. Atambaev ruled the country until 2017. His prime minister was Sooronbai Jeenbekov. Atambaev then helped Jeenbekov get elected president. The two men then fell out very badly indeed. President Jeenbekov returned early from vacation to take charge of the situation. This is a former Soviet republic with very close relations with Russia. In July 2019 Atambaev flew to Moscow for a friendly meeting with Putin. Moscow likes to hint that if Jeenbekov is not co-operative then it might prefer to see Atambaev return to power.
