Economics: Considerable reduction in multidimensional poverty in 2024 due to an increase in labor income

MEXICO - Report 26 Aug 2025 by Mauricio González and Francisco González

The National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) published the results of the 2024 Multidimensional Poverty measurement. This is the first time Inegi has been in charge of the report, following the dissolution of Coneval, which had been responsible for calculating multidimensional poverty using the current methodology since 2008. According to the report, the population in multidimensional poverty represented 29.6%, recording a considerable reduction compared to 2022 (36.3%) and an even greater one compared to 2018 (41.9%).

The increase in household income (primarily labor income) was significant in the lowest deciles, which in turn largely explains the reduction in multidimensional poverty through the income component, both compared to 2022 and 2018. Meanwhile, although the population with social deprivations decreased, there was a very concerning increase in the population without access to health services. This was caused by an erratic policy instituted by the Federal Government during the previous administration, which has been maintained during the current one.

Regarding last week's indicators, it was reported that the Global Indicator of Economic Activity (IGAE) increased in June by 0.9% YoY seasonally adjusted. And consumer inflation for the first half of August decreased slightly, to 3.49% annually, compared to 3.55% in the first half of July. This reduction was again due to a moderate drop in the non-core component, from 1.24% to 1.1%.
