Coronavirus surging in Russia

On October 5 the record for daily deaths was surpassed yet again. There were 895 deaths from coronavirus in 24 hours. The total death toll from the pandemic is 211,000 which is the highest in Europe.A new rise in cases has caused several regions to reintroduce restrictions for the first time since March. Russia has had its highest-ever numbers for 6 out of the past 8 days. There were over 25,000 new cases each day. Russia has suffered 7.6 million cases. However, most of those infected have since recovered. Russia has the 5th highest caseload in the world.Self-isolation rules are in force for people who have been in contact with those infected. In 11 regions public spaces are closed. The Kremlin has so far not chosen to impose federal coronavirus restrictions. Moscow is not too badly affected because it is the most vaccinated place in the country.Prime Minister Mishustin said on October 4 that he is worried about the situation. Hospitalizations are 100% higher than at this time in 2020. The PM complained that so few people have been vaccinated. Only 30% of people are vaccinated, one of the lowest figures in Europe. The public is bored with the coronavirus. People have lost their fear of it. It has not been the main item on the news for a year. It played little role in the September 2021 elections.
