Current VP Cedeño appointed as PLD vice presidential candidate

Yesterday, Gonzalo Castillo, the PLD presidential candidate announced that his ballot companion would be the current vice president Margarita Cedeño. The announcement was surprising and helps to energize the PLD, which has been on the defensive in recent weeks. Cedeño is very popular. Surveys show that she is the politician with the highest net rate of favorableness (acceptance rate - rejection rate). Since Castillo remain as an unconvincing candidate, PLD hopes that Cedeño strengthens the ticket and contributes to attract voters from PRM and FP camps. What is puzzling is that Cedeño is former president Leonel Fernandez’s wife and supported him in the October primaries. Recall that Fernandez left PLD at the end of 2019, after losing the primaries against Castillo (a dolphin of president Medina) by a narrow margin. Fernandez claimed fraud, abandoned the party, formed a new one (Fuerza del Pueblo -FP-) and became its presidential nominee. The split was very bitter. Hence, husband and wife are now political opponents and electoral competitors against each other. The move confirmed what was an open secret: that Fernandez and Cedeno were not really a couple but political allies whose ties have just been broken. However, it is not clear that Cedeño’s nomination for VP (for the third consecutive time) will contribute significantly to narrow the gap that separates Castillo and the PLD from Abinader and the PRM. The latest polls indicate that Abinader surpasses Castillo in the electoral preference by more than 10 percentage points.
