Datafolha: Bolsonaro leads; Ciro and Haddad fight for Lula’s supporters

BRAZIL POLITICS - Report 15 Sep 2018 by Murillo de Aragão and Cristiano Noronha

A new poll released yesterday(September 14) by Datafolha presents important information:
* Jair Bolsonaro (PSL) is on a trajectory of growth. While he made gains within the margin of error (two percentage points), compared to late August, he gained four points and has practically secured a spot in the runoff round;
* Fernando Haddad (PT) once again presents important gains: nine points since August. Exploring his ties with Lula (PT), Haddad has benefited from the transfer of prestige from the former president and is now numerically tied with Ciro Gomes (PDT) for 2nd place. The results for Haddad and Ciro reveal the fragmentation of Lula’s support;
* Ciro is showing that he is a competitive candidate. We still do not know if he will resist the association between Haddad and Lula, since he is fighting for support from the same voters as the PT;
* Marina Silva (REDE), who is also fighting for Lula’s votes, has lost steam. Compared to late August, she has lost 8 points and the trend is that she will be out of the game;
* Geraldo Alckmin (PSDB) has stagnated and chances of him advancing to the second round are becoming slimmer.Aside from the consolidation of Bolsonaro’s votes, options like Álvaro Dias (PODE), João Amoêdo (NOVO) and Henrique Meirelles (MDB) are “taking” votes away from the PSDB.
