The discussion on the extension emergency aid is growing in Brasília (DF). Of the three installments released by the government in the amount of R$ 600 for informal workers, one more is yet to be paid. In the face of pressure to extend the aid, President Jair Bolsonaro said the government should grant two more installments of the benefits. So far, the fiscal cost is estimated at R$ 154 billion.

However, according to Bolsonaro, the value of the other installments is not yet defined. For the emergency aid to be expanded, it is necessary to be approved by Congress. In a press conference, the President of the House of Deputies, Rodrigo Maia (DEM-RJ), argued that the government should forward a proposal to extend the aid. Maia stated that he is aware of the difficulties faced by the government, but stressed that the ideal is for the economic team to have an official position so that the debate can be carried out transparently in Congress, due to the program´s importance.

The debate over the extension of emergency aid should bring new differences between Congress and the Executive. In addition to the fiscal issue, the debate on the emergency aid will have political weight. With his declining popularity, maintaining aid is important for Bolsonaro to preserve the loyalty of the electorate´s share of informal and unemployed workers.
