EL SALVADOR: Authoritarianism on its way?

The removal of all five Constitutional Court members, as well as the Attorney General, was of the most striking decisions taken by the new legislators in their first day of Congress, on May 1, 2020. The constant disagreements of President Nayib Bukele with those officials, particularly strong regarding measures to combat COVID-19, were well known and mentioned in our previous reports. Therefore, the votes were not surprising, but they send bad signals. In fact, prioritizing these actions in a country with severe fiscal and security problems, along with persistent low economic growth, sounds like revenge against those not aligned with the presidential designs.
