El Salvador Brief: New actions to favor re-election

by Fernando Naranjo and Felix Delgado President Nayib Bukele proposed a reduction in the number of municipalities in El Salvador. The bill was approved on Wednesday, June 14th. Starting March 2024, the country will have 44 local governments compared to 262 nowadays. The name of the municipalities will not be lost because they will be converted into districts with the same name. According to the Ministry of Finance the reduction of municipalities will save $250 million dollars per year. Several political analysts mention that the real intention of the reform is to secure the president's re-election next year. Bukele is strong in these 44 municipalities. He also announced a proposal to reduce the number of congressmen from 84 to 60. Congress will approve this reform, and a strong majority in congress is expected for Bukele's party. He will have to resign 6 months before the elections. General elections will be held on February 4, 2024. Salvadorans will choose not only president and lawmakers, but also mayors for local governments.
