Election in Moldova leads to victory for pro EU party

On July 11 a parliamentary election resulted in victory for the ruling PAS Party. PAS is the party of President of Sandu. PAS won 53% of the vote. PAS will likely win a majority of the seats. Sandu said her victory meant the end of kleptocracy. The country is plagued by pecculation. BECS is the pro-Moscow party. It won 27% of the vote. BECS is led by Igor Dodon. The OSCE's and EU's observers said it was a fair election. It was noted by the other observers that election officials are not entirely impartial. Campaign finance remains a grey area. Moldova is the second poorest country in Europe. It has 3.2 million citizens many of whom live abroad. Moldovans abraod are allowed to vote. Moldovans abroad vote overwhelmingly for PAS. Turnout was 48%. The Shor Party is named after its leader Ilan Shor. His party won 6% of the vote.
