We had expected candidates allied with President Duterte to take most of the contested Senate seats in yesterday’s mid-term elections but it looks like they are slated to take all 12 seats. And while we did not think that the elections should be taken as a referendum on the President and his policies, the results suggest otherwise. With 95% of the votes counted, the results as of 4:50 p.m. today showed:None of the opposition candidates made it to the top 12. This includes Senator Bam Aquino, a cousin of former President Bengino Aquino III, who is seeking re-election and had placed in the top 12 spots in pre-election surveys and Mar Roxas, who vied against President Duterte for the presidency in 2016.Two of the top six candidates came into the national limelight only under President Duterte’s term and presumably won on the basis of their association with the President. These are Mr. Bong Go, the President’s personal aide, and General Bato dela Rosa, the police chief who spearheaded the President’s violent drug war. A third relatively unknown, who also received his strong endorsement, placed number 9 in the preliminary count, Mr. Francis Tolentino.Senator Grace Poe, expected to receive the most number of votes, landed behind Senator Cynthia Villar, wife of former Senator Manny Villar who ran and lost to Benigno Aquino III in 2010. The Villar’s Nacionalista Party is allied with the President and the President’s daughter’s party, HNP.We are preparing our outlook report and will discuss the implications more fully then.
