* A referendum in Russia approved over 200 constitutional amendments. Crucially, one of them allows Putin to seek two more presidential terms.
* Russia has emerged almost fully from lockdown and is open to tourism but there is little sign of an economic rebound.
* Kazakhstan was forced to reintroduce a strict lockdown in July due to an alarming rise in COVID-19 cases, especially in oil-rich regions.
* The Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict flared up in July with around 20 soldiers killed in three days. This is the worst spike in violence for several years.
* In Belarus the president’s re-election campaign is struggling so he has banned all credible candidates and arrested dissidents.
