EU asks Azerbaijan to sell more gas

On February 4 the EU's Energy Commissioner went to Baku to ask Azerbaijan to proffer more gas. The EU is heavily reliant on Russian gas. Some EU states get 100% of their gas from Russia. The Commissioner met President Aliyev. The EU Commissioner Kadri Simson hailed the cordial relations between Baku and the EU.The EU is requesting 10 billion cubic meters. There were British and US representatives in Baku as well as the EU delegation.Azerbaijan exported 19 billion cubic meters in 2021. Turkey bought 8.5 bcm, Italy bought 7 bcm and almost all the rest went to other EU countries such as Greece and Bulgaria. The Southern Gas Corridor from Azerbaijan to the EU vital for European energy. Azerbaijan has proven reserves of 2.6 trillion cubic meters of gas.The EU is suffering from high gas prices. Germany is striving to close its last nuclear power plants but without a dependable source of gas this will be impossible. Tensions with Russia mean that Nord Stream 2 might not come online in 2022. There is fear in the EU that if relations with Russia become too bad then Moscow might cut off all has. However, this is the view of the most alarmist commentators and has no precedent.
