EU expels 200 Russian diplomats

RUSSIA / FSU POLITICS - In Brief 06 Apr 2022 by Alex Teddy

On April 5 Italy, Spain and Slovenia expelled the diplomats. Slovenia even expelled the Russian ambassador and has recalled its own ambassador. France, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Romania, Portugal and Estonia expelled Russian diplomats on April 4. The Italians, Danes and Slovenians said this was due to what happened in Bucha, Ukraine. The EU expelled some Russian diplomats who were accredited to the EU itself. The EU and its member states say the diplomats who have been kicked out were spying. Moscow will no doubt respond in kind. Putin's spokesman said the expulsions were foolish and would make communications more difficult just when it was most needed. The EU is furious over an alleged massacre by Russian forces at Bucha, Ukraine. Moscow said that the corpses were fakes and were seen moving in videos. It says that civilians could have been killed in Bucha after Russian withdrawal. The EU is negotiating a new round of sanctions. These will need to be agreed by all 27 member states. Unanimity will be hard to achieve especially as Victor Orban has been re-elected as Prime Minister of Hungary. If not all EU states agree on sanctions then EU states can impose sanctions individually rather than collectively on Russia.
