EU foreign affairs high representative in Kyiv

RUSSIA / FSU POLITICS - In Brief 06 Feb 2024 by Alex Teddy

On February 6 Josep Borrell paid his 4th visit since the war began. He said he was there to reaffirm the EU's commitment to Ukraine. All these declaration of absolute solidarity seem suspicious. If the EU is so obviously committed why is it impelled to repeat that mantra constantly? In March 2024 Ukraine is due to receive EUR 4.5 billion which is the first tranche of the EUR 50 billion aid package. Ukraine urgently needs the money since it has not had any since December 2023. Ukraine needs it to pay salaries and for essential infrastructure maintenance. The economy shrank 30% since 2022 so Ukraine cannot afford to keep going without the grants and loans.  The US Senate passed a USD 60 billion aid package for Ukraine on February 5 but the Speaker of the House of Representatives said the package is ''dead on arrival'' in the House. The package must pass the House as well as the Senate if it is going to be given to Ukraine.  The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief also visited Kyiv independent of Borrell's trip on February 5. Rafael Grossi said he is still very worried about the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. The plant is the largest in Europe and has been in Russian hands since 2022. Grossi said the plant is understaffed, having 3,000 staff at most, when it needs 12,000, and Russia will not let the Ukrainian atomic energy agency technicians access the plant.
