EU tells Lithuania to allow rail transit of Russian goods

On July 13 the EU said that Lithuania must allow all Russian goods to be transported through its territory to the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad. Only weapons are banned. Road transport of certain goods remains banned. The relaxation of the rail transit ban is good news for Russia. Supplying Kaliningrad by air and ship would have been costly and difficult. When Lithuania blocked the transit of some goods in July 2022 Moscow complained and threatened retaliatory action, but took no action. The EU says it did not speak to Russia about the issue. Kaliningrad is the only region of Russia that is not connected by land to the rest of the Federation. Kaliningrad borders Poland and Lithuania. It is on the sea. Goods from Russia have to cross Belarus and Lithuania to get to Kaliningrad.
