The Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU or EEU) is the latest and most comprehensive of decades-long attempts to use economic interdependence in the Eurasian continent, to keep former Soviet Republics under the sphere of influence of Moscow. Today, the EEU is a limited Customs Union with a Common External Tariff, and therefore, its aim is to consolidate the free movement of goods, capital, services and labour. For that purpose, it can be compared with some inter-governmental institutions – similar on paper to the European Union, but quite limited in several other aspects, attending to the particularities of the Eurasian region and Russia’s role in it.
