BRAZIL POLITICS - Report 11 Jun 2020 by Murillo de Aragão and Cristiano Noronha

President Jair Bolsonaro announced yesterday, June 10, the re-creation of the Ministry of Communications, which is no longer part of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and appointed Federal Rep. Fábio Faria (PSD-RN) as its minister.

Faria's appointment has the following consequences:

* It solidifies the Centrão’s entry into the government, as it will occupy the first tier of government under President Jair Bolsonaro.

* It marks a break with Bolsonaro’s campaign, which promised not to resort to coalition presidentialism.

* It improves the environment for advancing post-pandemic reforms. It is important to remember that the Minister of the Economy, Paulo Guedes, has tried to get closer to the Lower House after some disagreements.

* It reinforces support for the government of a minimum governing coalition in the Lower House, meaning measures that increase public spending can be stopped.

* It comes at a time when the government is discussing the extension of emergency aid for informal workers with Congress. The economic team defends an extension of another two months with a value of R$ 300 for each installment.

With Fábio Faria at the head of the Ministry of Communications, there are other important consequences. One is that the Planalto Palace will strengthen its relationship with the Lower House.
