'Fidesz-puppets' to be sacked in about a month, PM Magyar claims

On May 31, the deadline set by PM Magyar for eight constitutionally independent top public officials to step down voluntarily expired. They include the President of the Republic, the Prosecutor General and the heads of the Constitutional Court, the Supreme Court, the National Bureau for the Judiciary, the State Audit Office, the Competition Authority and the Media Authority. None of these officials have actually resigned. Formally, Tisza has the problem with these people that they systematically represent Fidesz interests', rather than acting impartially, in the interest of the whole nation, as their constitutionally regulated role would require. Practically and more specifically, the problem is that these officials, especially the President and the Constitutional Court, could thwart Tisza's reform efforts and regular operation. In the first place, the President and the Constitutional Court would need little effort to block Tisza's action to urgently meet the conditions for EU funds to become available to Hungary. Should this happen, it would be a decisive failure for the Tisza government, essentially opening the way for Fidesz' political comeback.So, at 8am this morning (June 1), PM Magyar and his justice minister were knocking at the door of President Sulyok's residence, coming to get a final clarification of his position on the matter. They left dissatisfied, unsurprisingly.
