First round of opposition primaries ended with an almost complete lack of clarity

The first round of the united opposition's primary election is now over, and voting results are fully counted. Out of the 106 parliamentary constituencies, DK (the Democratic Coalition) has won candidacy in 32, Jobbik in 29, MSzP (the Socialist Party) in 18, Momentum in 15, Párbeszéd in 7 and LMP in 5. Regarding the common opposition candidate for prime minister, Klára Dobrev of DK came out first with 35% of the vote, followed by Gergely Karácsony of MSzP-Párbeszéd with 27%, non-party Péter Márky-Zay with 20%, Péter Jakab of Jobbik with 14% and András Fekete-Győr of Momentum with just 4%. For parliamentary constituencies, the contest is now over, whereas there will be a second round for the top three PM candidates between October 4-10 (or October 9-16 if the vote is postponed for logistical reasons, as it has come up most lately).At first glance, it would appear that the first round was won, though not with a great margin, by the centre-left, heavily pro-European Democratic Coalition. But no so fast: the second and third-ranking PM candidates (Karácsony and Márky-Zay) have teamed up since then, although they have not said so far which one of them would step back from the second round in favour of the other. They together could overcome Klára Dobrev in the second round, one of them becoming the opposition's joint candidate from prime minister for next April's election.This would be still all right in itself, but the current situation still leaves a number of important issues completely in the dark.
