First woman to become PM of Moldova

On July 31 Natalia Gavrilita was nominated to be Prime Minister of Moldova. She is due to be sworn in on August 5. She was nominated by President Sandu, who is the first woman to serve as president. Gavrilita is a member of the Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS), which won the election in July 2021. PAS has 63 of the 101 seats in Parliament. PAS wants Moldova to join the EU and is also determined to end corruption.Gavrilita is 43 and previously served as finance minister. Like Sandu she graduated from Harvard, and she previously worked for Oxford Policy Management in the UK and the Global Innovation Fund. Moldova borders Ukraine and Romania. After Ukraine, Moldova is the poorest country in Europe. The languages of Moldova are Romanian and Russian. Russian troops are stationed in the Transdnistria region of Moldova without the permission of the Moldovan government. This because since 1991 Russian has said it is unable to remove its weapons from the region!Some Moldovans are pro-Russia. The Socialist Party is the pro-Moscow party and draws its support from russophones. Moldova has at least 30% of its citizens working in the EU. Those who live abroad are allowed to vote and they overwhelmingly vote for PAS.
