Jorge Barata until recently Odebrecht’s CEO in Peru has accused ex-President Alejandro Toledo (2001-2006) in the context of Barata's collaboration arrangement with Brazilian justice, of accepting a $ 20 million bribe for aiding Odebrecht to win an PPP contract to build the Interoceanic Highway that links Peru and Brazil. This information was corroborated by information that his close friend, the Israeli businessman Josef Maiman had according to Peru`s prosecutors received half of the funds in a UK bank account account. Funds were afterward channeled to Toledo through a Costa Rican firm, Ecoteva, and later used by Toledo to by real state assets in Peru. Currently, Mr. Toledo is in Paris. Although he says he has a teaching job at Stanford University. Stanford has denied he has any position paid by the University. While Toledo has denied any wrongdoing Peruvian authorities have sufficient evidence to prosecute and eventually jail him. Yesterday Toledo`s home was searched; substantial amounts of documents were confiscated. This events are likely to be just one among many corruption-related acts soon to be revealed. Potentially such revelations could involve other past presidents. As the political and economical effects as this scandal unfolds it could severely compromise compromise President Kuczynski`s ability to deploy his plans to accelerate public and private investment.
