Funchal appointment shows commitment to fiscal austerity

Minister of Economy Paulo Guedes acted quickly and appointed economist Bruno Funchal as the new Secretary of the National Treasury. He will replace Mansueto Almeida, who will step down by August. Funchal is currently the Director of Programs at the Ministry of Economy. Before that, he was Secretary of Finance in Espírito Santo (ES), one of the states in the federation where public accounts are healthiest.

In the post-pandemic period, Bruno Funchal will have a strategic role since it will be up to him to put the economy back on the path of fiscal austerity after the needed stimulus measures. Funchal will also have an important mission with the National Congress, such as, for example, the negotiation of the economic reform agenda and the attraction of private investment. The choice of Bruno Funchal shows the Ministry of Economy's commitment to fiscal adjustment.
